Who We Are

The Climate Restoration Institute (CRI) is a multi-stakeholder nonprofit institution that accelerates the discovery, development and implementation of solutions that safely restore Earth’s climate so that humanity and the natural systems upon which we depend may thrive and flourish.

The Mission of Climate Restoration

To ensure that a historically safe climate is restored by 2050 for the benefit of our children and future generations. Historically safe means:

  • restoring CO2 levels to below 300 ppm

  • restoring methane levels to below 1 ppm

  • developing the methane removal capacity to oxidize a potential methane burst before it causes permanent ecosystem damage.

What We Do

We support and accelerate the development of climate restoration (CR) policies, programs and projects needed to reduce atmospheric GHGs to pre-industrial levels.

We vet CR engineering solutions for effectiveness at scale, safety, legal compliance, and ethical integrity.

We defend the principles and fortify the narrative of authentic climate restoration goals.

Our Programs & Initiatives

CRI’s framework of integrated climate restoration (CR) programs and initiatives provides a comprehensive approach to addressing the global climate crisis—from groundbreaking scientific research to pioneering engineering projects, and from educational initiatives to advocacy efforts—supported by a global advisory community of climate scientists, engineers, environmental advocates, concerned citizens, and academic, political and indigenous leadership. Programs include:

Engineering Projects

CRI will support the development and deployment of innovative technologies and solutions aimed at removing atmospheric GHGs—from safe, permanent and scalable nature-proven carbon capture and sequestration initiatives to ecosystem restoration.

Scientific and Academic Research

CRI will support the development of the academic field of CR through the dissemination of existing research, and the support of new research initiatives through funding, academic symposia, and collaboration among stakeholders.

Safety & Governance

CRI will ensure the integrity and efficacy of CRI initiatives—along with that of other CR solutions developed throughout the rapidly growing CR ecosystem and industry. This commitment to governance and accountability underpins the trust placed in us by our supporters, partners, and the global community we serve.

Advocacy & Engagement Initiatives

CRI will amplify the call for CR action, engaging with the public, policymakers, and global leaders and influencers—raising awareness, shaping public opinion, and promoting policies that support climate restoration.

Public Policy Initiatives

CRI’s public policy team will collaborate closely with governments and international bodies, advocating for the development and implementation of policies that facilitate timely CR restoration projects that will succeed at scale and prioritize global climate priorities.

Education Programs

CRI will enlighten and empower diverse audiences about climate science, restoration techniques, and the critical role individuals, organizations and communities play in the CR process and environmental stewardship through the co-creation of education programs at all levels with leading academic partners and platforms.

Data Development Initiatives

CRI will drive initiatives that collect, analyze, and disseminate crucial climate data to support both CRI-led projects and others, fostering collaborative progress towards common objectives.

Community Development

CRI will engage with communities globally to implement CR projects that improve environmental health and enhance social and economic well-being, demonstrating the tangible benefits of CR efforts, and inspiring broader participation and support.

RestoreTech Acceleration

CRI will nurture and fast-track the development and deployment of safe solutions that can significantly impact our planet's health by providing startups developing ground-breaking tech with resources, mentorship, and access to a network of experts.
